What Is Content Governance?

Content governance is the framework of standards, roles, workflows, and lifecycle rules that keeps an organization's content accurate, consistent, compliant, and on-brand — regardless of how many people, teams, and channels produce it. It answers, in writing and in system configuration, the questions every content operation otherwise answers ad hoc: who may create and approve what, against which standards, on which platforms, and what happens to content as it ages.

Governance is not bureaucracy for its own sake. It's the thing that makes speed safe: teams with clear standards and enforced workflows publish faster, because nobody is relitigating tone, ownership, or sign-off on every piece. And it has a new audience — AI systems now read, summarize, and act on your content, which makes inconsistency and staleness visible at machine scale.

The Components of a Content Governance Framework

  1. Standards. A style guide, brand and accessibility rules, SEO and metadata requirements, and quality criteria — the definition of "good" that reviews are conducted against, anchored in the content strategy.
